Task 1

Describe the disadvantages of moving to a new place.

Sample response

Well, there are quite a few drags when moving to a new place. To begin with, you don't have any friend, and that can be really stressful since people are social beings, and we need to interact with others occasionally, so living in new place and having no friends can be very tough. Additionally, since one is new to a place, he or she is not familiar with the town. One might find it difficult to locate nice restaurants for eating out, the place where they can do grocery, and even gas station, and that can be really inconvenient and stressing.

Task 2

Do you agree or disagree with the following statement: Schools need to encourage students to be more creative and use imagination to be successful person.

Sample response

Well, I couldn't agree more with this idea. To begin with, currently, university and school teach students a lot of theories and concepts, which requires a lot of  memorizing. To me, it doesn't make much sense since these kinds of so called knowledge are available everywhere, and students needs to be exposed to more creative teaching approaches. More importantly, imagination shelters people, and we can still be happy when bad things happen, and also we can find hope and inspiration when we are desperate if we are a little more creative and imaginative.

Task 3

問題：學校邀請客座研究人員來給同學們做講座。

女生不同意，

理由一：應該事先通知，因為其實現在并不是很方便開展。

理由二：還有好多課堂內容沒有講完，他們需要很長時間來理解細節，更沒有時間來學習新近的研究成果了。

Sample response

In the passage, it shows an email from a professor stating that there will be visiting researchers who will give presentations to students. The women doesn’t think it’s a good idea to have these visiting researchers. Firstly, the professor should have informed the students in advance, because it’s inconvenient now. The professor can also reschedule the time. Secondly, there are still tons of information that the students need to cover. They will need to spend a lot of time studying in order to understand the details, so there will be no energy available for them to learn about recent research.

Task 4

術語：批量生產

一個長例：雜志初版時，流通量小，但固定成本已經存在。流通量隨著時間，漸漸增加時，固定成本很少發生變化，分攤到每一本，成本也就變低了

Sample response

Economy of scale means if a company manufactures a certain product, the more they manufacture the lower the cost is, because the fixed cost will spread out over/onto all items. The lecture takes cooking magazines for an example. At first only a few people knew about the magazine, so the amount of publishing was limited and the cost was fixed. However, as time goes by, an increasingly number of people will know about this magazine, therefore the amount of publishing will increase while the fixed cost remains unchanged, thus the profit margin increases.

Task 5

學生問題：今晚有個朋友過生日，明早要參加一個競賽。

解決方案一：可以在公車上打個盹兒

解決方案二：打個招呼，提早離開派對

推薦方案一：公車上打盹兒是常事兒，朋友也不會失望。

Sample response

The woman is faced with a problem that she needs to attend a birthday party tonight, but there is a competition that she needs to attend early tomorrow morning. So she’s worried she won’t get enough rest to prepare for the race. There are two solutions. The first is to sleep on the bus when she is traveling around. The second solution is to say happy birthday to her friend and leave the party earlier. In my opinion, I think she should just take a nap on the bus, as it’s usually very comfortable to sleep on the bus. If the bus ride is long, she will get sufficient sleep during the commute. I don’t think the second solution is a good idea, because if she leave her friend’s party earlier, her friend might get upset.

Task 6

術語：冬眠

觀點一：同時冬眠，因為冬天大家都冷，都沒吃的，不約而同，一起冬眠。

觀點二：不考慮時間的冬眠。單單只是因為食物緊缺，而不得不冬眠。

In the lecture, the professor talks about different ways  for animals to hibernate. Hibernation helps keep the animal alive during harsh temperatures like winter. The professor first mentions “hibernation at the same time”. When the weather is cold, food will become scarce until summer. Therefore, it is common for animals to all group together and hibernate at the same time. This way animals can keep each other warm and last throughout the whole winter. Second, the professor mentions hibernation without considering time. In the winter months, there will never be enough food. So animals are forced to hibernate. He takes the mouse as an example, the mouse will go into deep hibernation which will lower their needs for food.
