跟著Vera老師漲姿勢 | 你認識的Sam里有他嗎？

我認識的大人和孩子里頭有不少英文名叫Sam的，一直覺得這名叫起來既簡單利索，又不失親切。Vera老師想到一個在美國名氣不小的“大叔”——Uncle Sam。關于Uncle Sam，這里想和大家分享一個有趣的美國歷史傳說。

相傳在紐約州的特洛伊城（Troy）有位年長的肉類加工商，名叫山繆爾·威爾遜（Samuel Wilson）。他勤勞、誠實、能干，很有威信，人們親切地叫他“山姆大叔（Uncle Sam）”。在1812年的美英戰爭中，他的工廠與政府簽了一份為軍隊生產桶裝牛肉的合同，美國政府每當收到他交來的經其親自檢驗合格的牛肉，就將肉裝入特制的木桶，并在桶上蓋上E.A.-U.S.記號，其中U.S.指的是產地美國。

These barrels had “U.S.” on the outside of them, which stood for “United States.” Mr. Wilson’s workers, though, often joked that the “U.S.” stood for “Uncle Sam” Wilson.

U.S.是美國（The United States）的縮寫，正好“Uncle Sam”的首字母大寫也是US，他的工人們就開玩笑說這個標記也表示“山姆大叔”。

Over time, the shipments became known as presents from “Uncle Sam.” Since it was the United States federal government that was providing the food for its soldiers, “Uncle Sam” soon became associated with the U.S. government.

玩笑傳開后，人們把那些軍需食品都稱為“山姆大叔”送來的食物。由于這是聯邦政府提供的軍糧，后來人們漸漸將“山姆大叔”與美國政府相聯系。

Since Uncle Sam was an example of a hard-working man and a lover of America, the idea of"Uncle Sam" as the name of this kind of man became well-known rapidly.

By the end of the war of 1812,"Uncle Sam" had come to symbolize the character of the nation and the government.In 1961 the US Congress made a decision that "Uncle Sam" is the America's national symbol.

“山姆大叔”勤勞，愛國，這一良好形象便迅速深入人心。1961年，美國國會正式承認“山姆大叔”為美國的民族象征和代表。

Probably the most famous picture of Uncle Sam, though, was on a U.S. Army recruiting poster. Designed for World War I and used again in World War II, the poster features a caption that reads “I Want You for U.S. Army.” The poster’s artist was James Montgomery Flagg, who also served as the model for Uncle Sam!

“山姆大叔”曾出現在一戰和二戰的美國征兵海報上，海報下方寫著“I Want You for U.S. Army”（“美國軍隊需要你”）的字樣，這個漫畫形象正是由畫家詹姆斯·蒙哥馬利·弗拉格（James Montgomery Flagg）創作的。
